On Zibbet, you can use your own custom domain name for your standalone website. For example: mystore.com, instead of mystore.zibbet.com. We highly recommend using a custom domain. It’s a lot more professional and a very important part of your store’s branding.

Configuring your custom domain looks tricky at first glance, but  don’t worry, we’ll do our best to make this guide as clear as possible and point you in the right direction if you get stuck!

First, the basics…

  • Domain names aren’t provided by Zibbet. You will need to purchase one from a domain name provider, if you don’t have one already.
  • You can get a FREE domain name by signing up for any of our annual plans. More info on the Zibbet Blog.
  • If you don't have a domain name yet, we recommend purchasing one through Hover. They have excellent customer service and have made domain configuration a breeze. We also have a Hover specific help guide on how to connect your domain to your Zibbet website.
  • Configure your domain first, by following the instructions below. THEN, add your domain name to the “Domains” page in your admin panel, and click the “Save” button.

You have 2 options…

  1. You can email your domain provider to configure your domain for you. We have pre-written a handy email for you below that you can send to them.
  2. You can attempt to do it yourself. We have included detailed instructions for some of the top domain providers below.

Option 1 (recommended).

We highly recommend this option as your domain provider will be able to make the changes required with ease. They handle 100s of requests like this all day long!

Here’s an email template that you can send them – just edit the bolded sections:

---------------

Hi there,

I made a website using Zibbet and I want to point my domain name, {enter domain name you have registered with them here. E.g. mystore.com}, to my Zibbet website, {enter your Zibbet website URL here. E.g. mystore.zibbet.com}.

There’s 2 things we need you to do:

  1. We need a CNAME record created for alias, “www”. This needs to point to {enter your Zibbet website URL here. E.g. mystore.zibbet.com}.
  2. We need our non-www URL ({enter the domain name you have registered with them here, WITHOUT the “www”. E.g. mystore.com}) to redirect to the “www” URL ({enter the domain name you have registered with them here, WITH the “www”. E.g. www.mystore.com}), with a 301 redirect.

Note: I want to keep using you as my domain registrar.  This is not a transfer request and we do not have new name servers to provide you.

If you have any questions, please let me know, or contact support@zibbet.com if you have questions for them.

Thank you!

Send that to your domain provider and fill in the necessary details for the bolded sections.

IMPORTANT: Once you’ve sent that email, head to your Zibbet admin panel, go to the “Domains” page (under “Settings” title on the left hand navigation). Enter your domain name and hit “Save”.

Once your domain provider has made the changes, it can take up to 48 hours for their servers to fully update (although it is generally only an hour or two!). Your domain won’t work until their updates are complete.

Option 2 (DIY).

If you feel comfortable making these changes yourself, we’ve included step-by-step instructions for several of the most popular domain providers:

For all other domain providers, see detailed instructions below:

1. Create a CNAME record.

You need to edit your “DNS” settings. Generally you’ll find this under “DNS manager”, “Zone file settings” or some other name in your domain’s control panel. Contact your domain provider if you can’t find it. On this DNS page you’ll need to create a CNAME record for “www” or you’ll need to edit the CNAME record if one already exists. Enter the following:

  • Alias: www
  • Type: CNAME
  • Points to: enter your Zibbet website URL here. E.g. mystore.zibbet.com

2. Set up a 301 redirect.

Set your non-www URL (E.g. mystore.com) to redirect the www URL (E.g. www.mystore.com) with a 301 redirect. You can do this on the “domain forwarding” page of your domain’s control page. Be sure to select “forwarding only” or a 301 redirect “without masking”.

3. Add your domain to Zibbet.

Once you’ve completed the above, head to your Zibbet admin panel, go to the “Domains” page (under “Settings” title on the left hand navigation). Enter your domain name and hit “Save”.

Nice work, that’s it! It can take up to 48 hours for your domain’s servers to fully update (although it is generally only an hour or two!). Your domain won’t work until their updates are complete.

Note: If you have questions regarding configuration, please email your domain provider directly. They can help you with their eyes closed, as they deal with 100s of these requests every day! Unfortunately, we have limited support for domains as we cannot access your domain account under any circumstances, even if you want to give us your explicit permission to do so.

Good luck! Remember, even though we have limited ability to support you with domains, we’re here to help you, so just contact us if you have any concerns. At the very least, we can help to point you in the right direction!
